The Children of Truffaut
June 2007
Our sixth production brought The Old Kent Road Theater's unique charm to The Pretentious Festival, a Brick Theater project that the New York Times says will appeal to "the black-turtleneck-wearing aesthete inside us all." After tremendous success at the festival, The Brick extended Truffaut into July, with a limited run July 26-29.
The Children of Truffaut thrusts eight characters drawn from 70's Continental cinema into a game of arousal, angst, bluster, pontification, and whimsy. Godard, Fassbinder, Fellini, and Tarkovsky each provide the atmospheric starting point for a male/female pair. Once the pairs are spawned, though, pretty much anything goes, especially transgression, nostalgia, and love.

"Bland's play is pure inspiration," says NYTheatre.com. "His vision for the show is crystal clear and his staging looks gorgeous... The acting is great."
"One of the most striking aspects of this show is Bland's direction... There are characters placed at all levels, the pacing is alternately fast and slow, and he leads the eye just exactly were he wants it. The stage, by the end of the play, is a beautiful mess. An actor rubs yogurt on himself, a banana is squished into the stage, and there are countless other little bits and pieces everywhere."
