| The Old Kent Road Theater is proud to present two stories about love in all the strange places with the double bill The Bad Bruise of Billy MacBean and The Gringo of the Deli Acapulco opening at UNDER St. Marks (94 St. Marks Place between 1st Ave and Ave A) on January 21st and closing February 13th. Performances run Sundays-Tuesdays at 8PM. Tickets cost $15 and can be purchased by calling SmartTix at 212-868-4444 or by going to www.smarttix.com. The Bad Bruise of Billy MacBean wittily deconstructs a relationship with verbal sparring, poetic interludes and contemplative vignettes. Billy and Klare like each other very much, that much is clear, but he simply won't leave his basement. A former child chess prodigy, Billy has become agoraphobic since the death of his father and no amount of coaxing can extract him from his home. This tender new play is a beautiful allegory for the power of communication. The cast includes Charlie Hewson and Kaytie Morris. The Gringo of the Deli Acapulco is a euphemism for outsiders. An insane tramp and a social worker fall instantly in love after locking eyes at an all-night deli in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. This magical moment, as it turns out, is just that as something more supernatural is in play. The entrance of Olivia's sister's ghost and the sudden appearance of a revolver from under a tablecloth pull the lovers into a deadly contest where identity, mortality, and even objective reality are questioned and blurred. The cast includes Reema Zaman and Scott Eckert. Eric Bland (writer) wrote and directed the play Das Brat in the 2006 Midtown International Theatre Festival. He has a degree in Creative Writing from Princeton University and an M.A. in Playwriting from Goldsmiths College, University of London. Other productions: Mock the Knife (2003 New York International Fringe Festival), and The Great Americano (The Red Room). Both plays are being directed by Noah Burger who graduated from Princeton University where he directed Guare's Six Degrees of Separation, Shawn's The Designated Mourner, Beckett's Act Without Words II, and received the Actor's Prize for excellence in acting and directing. The Old Kent Road Theater (Production Company) produced the play Das Brat in the 2006 Midtown International Theatre Festival. The theater collective was begun by Eric Bland and Scott Eckert in late 2005. The Bad Bruise of Billy MacBean & The Gringo of the Deli Acapulco together serve as the Old Kent Road Theater's second production. |
