Das Brat
The Midtown International Theatre Festival
July 2006

In Das Brat, Jarrod returns from Berlin with opinions on bratwurst, humiliation, and tipping etiquette. But before he can fully explore his newfound philosophies, his former girlfriend, Ekatarina, bursts onto the scene. Yep, she wants money for their illegitimate child again, the one Jarrod left when he ran off to Europe. Soon enough Hazel, Ekatarina's sister, appears. Initially she's here to negotiate the reunification of Jarrod and her sis. But something else blossoms, and fades.
Das Brat is an unusual take on love, loss, and one man's attempt at transformation and transcendence. It features dance, musical interlude, spooning, rap, and the odd massage. The net result is something hopeful, funny, and sincere.

NYTheatre.com calls Das Brat a, "quirky, melancholy drama... a genuinely compelling bit of theatre."
"More urgent than Bland's storyline are the moods and feelings it manages to convey. The writing has an academic, poetic flair; it seems remote and detached and, at the same time, very specific in conjuring Jarrod's various states of mind... Bland is certainly a writer to keep an eye on. And his leading man, Scott Eckert, is a talented young actor who embodies all the sad and tender contradictions of his character with real panache."
